REGLAZING ABC'S

What is reglazing?

Reglazing is the process by which fiberglass, cast iron, porcelain, ceramic fixtures and other surfaces are refinished just like new.  With reglazing, your worn out bathtub and tile can be restored to their original luster, right in place in just a few hours and at a fraction of the cost of replacement.  Reglazing is synonymous with "resurfacing", "refinishing", and "restoration".

Why is my old bathtub dull looking?

Over the years, mainly due to the use of harsh, abrasive cleaners, your bathtub has probably lost its original luster.  No more shine.  In addition, the surface has actually become porous to the point where keeping it clean is very difficult, if not impossible.  Dirt and soap scum are caught and trapped in the roughened surface just like a sponge holds water.

How is reglazing done?

The type of fixture substrate that we are going to reglaze will determine the process that we use. Porcelain is prepped in a different way then fiberglass is prepped.  Porcelain is a glass that is baked in a kiln so you cannot sand that for adhesion.  Here, we apply a hydrofluoric acid to etch into the porcelain, making it porous.  These pores will create a mechanical bond between the porcelain and the glaze.  It gives the glaze something to grab on and bond to.

Fiberglass uses a different process.  We can sand that with different grits of sandpaper to achieve a mechanical bond.

Once that step is done, we use a hvlp system and a professional spray gun to apply the primer and topcoat. There are a few other things we do also, like masking off the fixtures, walls, and floor, and filling chips and scratches.

The entire process takes just a few hours and the bathtub can be used the very next day.  Older, substandard materials, like epoxies, take several days to dry.   By utilizing a highly advanced thermo-molecular technology, the process creates a new finish so thin that it’s nearly impossible to tell it’s not original.
